Towards the end of the 1860s, Unterberger travelled through Italy, and from then on, the immensely popular Southern European motifs increasingly dominated his work. It was Southern Italy in particular that inspired the artist. The work offered here depicts a scene that Franz Richard Unterberger repeated in various versions. The painter lays the dust stirred up by the carriages and horses on the picturesque coastal road like a thin veil over the scene.
