Spanish collection. Juan de Arellano is one of the most famous Spanish flower painters, known as ‘Floreros’. His extensive oeuvre owes much of its inspiration to Flemish flower painting and Italian models, in particular Mario Nuzzi and Margarita Caffi. Nuzzi's influence is particularly evident in his later works, with their jagged, flickering silhouettes of flowers and contrasting light and dark modelling of the flower heads. Characteristic of his compositionally and colouristically remarkable still lifes is the wicker basket with flowers, but also the inclusion of crystal objects. His most important followers are his son José and his son-in-law Bartolomé Pérez, who also worked with Arellano on some occasions.
