Description:

Stuttgart 1758 - 1838
73,5 x 61 cm
Self-portrait in front of an easel. Half-length portrait, facing the viewer. Oil/canvas, relined.
Northern German collection. Expert report: Professor Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, May 3 2016. After studying in Paris and Rome, Friedrich Hetsch returned to Stuttgart, where he taught at the Hohe Karlsschule from 1887 onwards and was appointed professor in 1790. Hetsch was particularly influenced by the French painters Jacques Louis David, Joseph Maria Vien and Claude Joseph Vernet.
In his expert report, Börsch-Supan compares the painting primarily with the lost ‘Self-Portrait with Family’. He dates it to around 1785, which would mean it shows a 27-year-old man.
