Cambodia, Khmer, 13th cent.
H. 73 cm / 79,5 cm
Carved in seated posture, all four lower paws damaged, his raised roaring head showing bulging eyes above his slightly upturned snout, open mouth displaying a double row of teeth, mane framing the backside of his head, the chest with curls and his tail curling up his back.
From the estate of the Helmut Ploog Collection (1940-2024), according to the note on the collection card acquired in the 1980s, illustrated on a photo (original preserved) March 1994 - Cf. a head of a löwen, dated 13th century from the Jacques Barrère Collection, Paris, auctioned at Christie's Amsterdam, 2 Nov. 1999, lot 139 - Ageschäden.
