Description:
China, Neolithic, Gansu Yangshao culture, ca. 2500 - 2000 BC.H. je 28 cn
The first vessel with full, rounded body rising to a cylindrical neck and flared mouth, applied below the waist with two studded handles, painted to the waist with two scalloped Bänders; The second vessel with a shapely moulded body in a compressed egg shape, with a high, slightly waisted cylindrical neck, shoulders decorated with a band of cross-hatched egg-shaped fields with broad red ränders, interrupted by wavy lines, above broad concentric bänders in red and black around the centre, divided by two handles, collar with upright triangular motifs between further bands on the neck.
From an important German private collection, the first vessel acquired at Christie's London, 7 June 1993, lot 9 (condition request and catalogue description preserved in copy), the second vessel acquired at Sotheby's London, 10. December 1985, lot 62 (catalogue description and invoice preserved in copy)
A vessel with similar decoration around the body is illustrated in Wenwu, 1978, no. 10, p. 70, fig. 9 (5), in an article by Yen Wen-ming üon the origin of painted pottery from Gansu, who surmises that this jar, from Lanzhou, Hualinping, dates from the Xiaopingz period - Slightly chipped, the second vessel with wear and minor rest.
