Description:
China, Yuan/ early Ming dynastyH. 34 cm
Heavily potted, ovoid-shaped vase with a short, upright neck. The wall is decorated in the sgraffito technique with a wide frieze of large peony flowers flanking a stem with large leaves. The decoration is executed in a thick black glaze, which has been left out on the red-brown body. The high-contrast decorations in black on light, which are created using the scoring technique (sgraffito), are characteristic for Cizhou ware. The peony as the main motif symbolises wealth and beauty and is one of the most frequently used floral ornaments.
