149,5 x 129 cm R.
Ink and pigments on silk. Mounted on a stretcher frame. This finely detailed painting depicts the god of immortality as a smiling old man sitting on a flying crane. He is dressed in sumptuous silk robes with motifs such as bats and shou medallions and is holding a large peach, which confers immortality with his right hand, with his left he balances a long ruyi scepter over his shoulder. Two red bats flutter around him, and in the background, the island of immortals “Penglai” is hinted at by a high mountain range, which is complemented by the roaring waves in the foreground.
