China, Yongzheng / early Qianlong periodH. 34,7 cm
Of archaistic baluster form flanked by rectangular lug handles, each side decorated with an idyllic scene of scholars in nature, framed by rosé intertwined bats and flanked by cartouches of mountain and river landscapes as well as floral designs on the side, all wreathed by scrolls and reserved on a grey ground, the neck and foot encircled by a border of meandering patterns and floral emblems.

This vase is noteworthy for its rare grey ground and the meticulously executed painterly designs with naturalistically rendered figures and landscape elements.
