China, Yongzheng/ Qianlong period20,5 x 27,5 x 27,5 cm
With deep curved sides decorated with shaped cartouches, alternately enclosing figural scenes and vignettes of birds and flowers, with a pair of C-scroll handles, the interior painted around the sides with fish swimming amidst water weeds, with a somewhat ovoid chimney rising in the center, all finely and delicately decorated with cartouches of figures at leisurely pursuits on the sides, flowers and foliage reserved on cell-pattern grounds on the top of the cover, the interior decorated with fish and water plants.
European private collection, owned by the family before 1970, originally collected in the second half of the 19th century while serving in the diplomatic service in China
A closely related wine warmer is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (C.111-1947), which has landscape panels and is complete with cover to the chimney. A very similar wine warmer was sold at Christie's London, 4.6.2019 from the collection of Drue Heinz Townhouses in London and New York - Losses, overpainted sections and damages to cover, few smaller damages inside at the stand
