Description:
China, Guangxu periodL. 120 cm, B. 176 cm
Ermine fur with tails, finely sewn together by hand, edged in green silk. Opposite side: silk damask (light yellow). A layer of paper between the two. The robe is made of numerous white ermine skins, the tails with black tips arranged in rows. The hem at the bottom is slightly rounded, and the opening for the neck is closed with a square piece of green silk. The side seams are open and closed with ribbons. Traditional Chinese silk damask with a stylized cloud pattern was used for the reverse side. The green silk features numerous Chinese characters, which include the manufacturer's signature and other information that has not yet been clarified. Due to the open sides and the unfinished neckline, it could be a costume for a deity figure or a theater costume. The precious and unusual materials suggest that it was ordered by high-ranking persons or even from the imperial palace.
Collection Adolf Georg "Ago" von Maltzan (Mecklenburg 1877 - Thüringen 1927), collected between 1912 and 1917 in the diplomatic service in Peking. By inheritance to a family member - In good condition with only slight signs of age and wear, one ribbon missing
