The ruyi sceptre (如意, "as you wish") is one of the emblematic objects of the Qing period. It functioned as a representative symbol of happiness and was presented as an honour and a gift in a courtly context. This example is made of multi-layered red lacquer (Cinnabar lacquer), which was deeply embossed after hardening. The floral cartouches - typically peonies and lotus - refer iconographically to honour, prosperity and harmony - Part. minor restorations
