Sparrows and bamboo. Ink and colours on paper, matted and framed under glass. Signature: "Wenxi ji" (painted by Wenxi) and a seal of the artist. Inscribed "(Dr Chen Wen Hsi)" (possibly added by the collector) in pencil lower left. Inscribed on the reverse in pencil "Mrz. 77".

Chen Wenxi (1906-1991) was born in Jieyang of Guangdong province. In his youth, he already showed great talent and passion for art and painting. He studied in the Xinhua College of Art in Shanghai with renowned artists such as Pan Tianshou and had later solo exhibitions in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc. Since 1948, he lived in Singapore and worked as an art school teacher. Chen is known for his avant-garde Chinese paintings, especially animal paintings of monkeys and herons - In good condition
