A blue-glazed porcelain ewer for the Islamic market

Description:

China, 17th/ 18th cent.
H. 29,3 cm
Finely potted with a pear-shaped body on a short, slightly outwardly tapered foot, tapering towards the mouth, moulded into a protruding half-moon shape, with a rib around the neck, the long spout slightly curved outwards with a hexagonal tip. All around with now worn gold painting. The base unglazed.
From an old German diplomate collection, by descent with the present owners
This special shape with the deep blue glaze and the crescent-shaped head is based on a similar shape of metal jug, which was then produced in China for export - The gold painting worn off
Cf. two almost identical ewers, whose gold painting is better preserved, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession nos. 1674-1876 and 775-1888. A further example with silver mounting was sold at Sotheby's London, 20 April 2016, lot 205.
