The motif of the "Seven Sages in the Bamboo Grove" (竹林七賢 Zhulin qixian) is one of the most famous depictions of Chinese scholarly culture and was frequently reproduced on porcelains of the Qing dynasty in the 18th century. It goes back to historical figures of the 3rd century AD - intellectuals, poets and musicians who retreated to the seclusion of a bamboo grove during political turmoil.
