Lim Cheng Hoe (1912-1979) was born in Xiamen, China, and moved to Singapore at the age of seven. He was a pioneering Singaporean artist - one of the most important watercolourists of his generation, and co-founder of the Singapore Watercolour Society. He is known for his atmospheric depictions of local landscapes and scenes. His works depict rural Singapore from the 1930s to the 1970s, including kampongs (Malay villages), coastal scenes and the Singapore River. In 1969 he received the National Day Long Service Medal. In 2018, the National Gallery Singapore honoured his work with a major exhibition called Lim Cheng Hoe: Painting Singapore
