Ryoshu Matsuo is a Japanese modern and contemporary artist known for his abstract, expressive compositions. After studying at Kyoto-Seika College, he moved to Germany, where he became a master student of minimalist painter Raimund Girke. Matsuo’s work blends Eastern aesthetics with European post-war abstraction, characterized by dynamic brushwork, layered textures, and a contemplative use of colour. His paintings evoke a meditative intensity, balancing gestural freedom with compositional control. He has exhibited widely in Europe, including at the Haus der Kunst in Munich and Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, positioning him as a cultural bridge between Japan and Europe. Today, Matsuo lives and works in Berlin, continuing to explore the dialogue between tradition and abstraction.
