In this larger-format composition, Hölzel intensifies the energy of his abstract visual language. The pastel unfolds a vibrating density: planes of red, violet, and orange collide with green and blue tones, traversed by a black linear framework that, like a net, captures the eruptive movements of colour. A field of tension arises between order and dissolution, structure and dynamism.
This sheet exemplifies how, in the 1910s, Hölzel used the means of colour to create an autonomous reality. Pastel and pencil enter into a productive dialogue - the delicate, almost fleeting luminosity of the pigment stands in contrast to the rigor of the line. The impression is that of an inner architecture, one that is neither narratively bound nor purely decorative, but instead visualizes spiritual rhythms and emotional states.
Here, Hölzel once again proves himself a pioneer of abstraction: through his teaching and his own works, he laid the groundwork for modernism in Germany. The forms dissolved into planes and the musically rhythmic structure of the composition already point to developments later pursued at the Bauhaus and in Classical Modernism. This work is not only an expression of artistic emancipation, but also a manifesto of colour as a bearer of spirit, mood, and movement.
