Double Bass, c. 2014. Mixed media. Sculpture on Plexiglas base. Unique piece. Signed on a plaque affixed to the base.
Galleries Bartoux, Cannes.
Collection Monika and Horst Bülow, Leonberg, acquired there in 2014.
The expressive sculpture in the form of a double bass strikingly combines the aesthetics of the classical musical instrument with the visual language of contemporary art. The colourfully painted body is covered on its front with a brightly hued urban cityscape immersed in a vibrating blue. Skyscrapers, lights, and rhythmically set verticals transform the instrument’s resonating body into a stage for the pulsating dynamics of the metropolis.
Born in 1964, Lirone is known for his unique works that cross the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and object art. In his practice, he reflects on themes such as music, sound, and urban energy, reinterpreting traditional forms with modern materials and surface techniques. Here, the double bass is understood not only as a sound body but as a carrier of pictorial narration: the instrument becomes a metaphor for vibration, rhythm, and the cultural vitality of the urban environment.
Mounted on a transparent plexiglass base, the sculpture acquires an almost floating quality that enhances the tension between the massive body of the instrument and the light, glass-like architecture of the painted cityscape.
This work is a unique piece and exemplifies Lirone’s artistic engagement with music as a source of inspiration, as well as with the symbiosis of classical form and contemporary imagery.
