Description:
Turkey, circa 1575D. 29,5 cm
Decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, deep viridian green, coral red in relief, with black outlines, with a breaking wave design on the rim within foliate rings, and a single cypress tree with a forked tip at the centre, flanked by a symmetrical design of tulips, roses and marguerites all springing from a leafy tuft, with six crescents and triple sprays on the back, the base with various etiquettes, incribed RSCC 134; and Dickinson 104 New Bond Street W 1716/dn/-/- (in ink).

The forked cypress is a dominant motif on a number of Iznik dishes, such as those in the City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol (inv.no. Or EA 7993); ex-Adda Collection (Rackham Cat. 126); Freer Gallery of Art, Washington DC (inv.no. 66.25), and the Benaki Museum, Athens (inv.no.23); see Atasoy & Raby, p.235. See also a dish (Lot 41) and a waterbottle (Lot 18) in the Lagonico Collection, the latter once in the possession of Enrico Caruso.
