Description:

Lwena, Angola
H. 22,5 (25,5) cm
Wood, partially with black staining and a redwood overlay. Cylindrical body with the typically shaped headdress, which here is decorated with geometric incised carving. On the elongated torso, the arms are bent and positioned at the sides. The depiction of the dark-stained arm and shoulder area is strikingly abstract. On the front and back, a modesty panel has been incorporated using a piece of textile. The Lwena are neighbours of the Chokwe and share numerous stylistic similarities.
From the collection of Helmut Zake (1918-1995), Heidelberg, German historian and founder of the Society for Ethnology and Tribal Art, inherited within the family - Minor wear, partially slightly chipped, on plinth
