Description:

Probably Safavid, Kubachi, Persia, 17th c.
60 x 97,5 cm
Polychrome glazed tiles. Octagonal tiles with bust portraits painted in a pastel palette, some with border motifs in underglaze blue, alternate with turquoise-coloured ceramic lozenge fragments. Surrounding elongated tiles are decorated with border ornamentation of arabesque cloud bands and floral scrollwork. The tiles are partially trimmed; the overall composition was assembled at a later date.
From the collection of art dealer and collector Saeed Motamed (1925-2013), collected since the 1950s, largely documented in a 1998 inventory with drawings and Persian descriptions.
