Seated baboon mother with two young, resting on a square plinth. In ancient Egypt, the baboon was closely associated with the god Thoth, the god of writing and wisdom, as well as the guardian of knowledge in the fields of medicine and science. Accordingly, baboon figures were used in both religious and scholarly contexts.
From a German private collection, according to the consignor, the piece originates from the collection of the Egyptologist Bolko (von) Stern, the author of Egyptian Cultural History in Antiquity, Leipzig, 1896, and was acquired in Egypt around 1874 - Chipped
