Description:

Bamana, Mali
H. 44 cm
Wood. The animal masks of the Bamana are often associated with the “Kore” society and were used in initiation rites or during agricultural celebrations. An important example is the hyena mask, which is the type represented here. It served as a guardian, but also in ceremonies related to the fertility of the earth and rain. This very old mask features a strongly emphasised open mouth, a prominently accentuated nasal area, and two oval ears, along with a jagged ridge on the forehead. Partially, it is decorated with fine geometric incised carving.
From the collection of Helmut Zake (1918-1995), Heidelberg, German historian and founder of the Society for Ethnology and Tribal Art, inherited within the family - Partially damaged and worn due to age, clamped on the underside
