Description:

Probably Kuba, Zaire, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
H. 37 cm
The expressive, powerful wooden mask, executed in a strongly “cubist” style, displays many classic features of the Kuba “bwoom” mask, but could possibly be attributed to a neighbouring group. Slightly atypical characteristics include the highly raised eyebrows and the strongly protruding, bean-shaped eye area. The chin is less broadly modelled than in classic Kuba examples. A peg is inserted in the centre of the skull, generally used to seal a “magical charge”. Below the hairline is a raffia decorative band. Geometric incised carving on the chin, temples and neck. An interesting collector’s piece.
