Description:

possibly Lele, Democratic Republic Kongo
H. 40 cm
Wood with colouring in kaolin and redwood. Face mask with abstracted facial features and an open mouth revealing the teeth. On either side of the mouth corners there is triangular scarification in incised carving. The eyes and the arched brows are highlighted in white linear decoration. The triangular facial area is crowned by a panel decorated with incised carving featuring a jagged, crown-shaped motif. The crown area, eyes, mouth, and ears have redwood colouring. The semicircular ears are pierced. The eye area, however, is not pierced to allow a view, so it can be assumed that the mask was worn in front of the forehead or on the crown of the head.
