Description:

Bamileke, Cameroonian Grasslands
H. 65,5 (71) cm
Brown wood with a reddish-brown hue. This is a so-called “Mu’po” figure. They are usually attributed to the Bamileke, but are also known among the neighbouring Bangwa and Bafo communities. These figures assist healers in matters of medicine. They are often characterised by markedly swollen bodies. In this case, the male figure holds his genitals, suggesting medical issues in that area. Expressive carving.
From the collection of Helmut Zake (1918-1995), Heidelberg, German historian and founder of the Society for Ethnology and Tribal Art, inherited within the family - Partly chipped and fine age cracks
