Portrait of a young gentleman wearing a ruff (Philip Rubens?). Oil/canvas, relined, on the reverse of the stretcher, two old lacquer seals: ‘Haupt-Steueramt Liegnitz’ and a coat of arms with a count’s crown.
Based on the painting in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden (cat. no. 1036). Both the authorship and the subject of the Dresden painting have been the subject of controversy in the past. The painting is now regarded as a copy of a lost original by Van Dyck.
