The Washing of the Feet. Oil/panel, inscribed in Latin at the bottom centre of the cartouche: "Omnium Dominus ad Servorum Suorum Pedes Lavandos se in genua Prosternit Singularis Humilitatis Exemplum" (The Lord of all kneels down to wash the feet of his servants as a unique example of humility).
From a private German collection. The washing of feet is a ritual act of hospitality originating in the Orient; Jesus, too, performed this ritual and washed his disciples’ feet during the Last Supper, on the eve of his crucifixion. The highly figurative motif created by Lambert Lombard was already widely circulated during the artist’s lifetime through a copperplate engraving published by Hieronymus Cock (Antwerp c. 1501 - 1570) between 1554 and 1568. This painting is therefore likely to be a copy made fairly soon after the engraving was made.
