Southern German private collection. Regnier, who hailed from the French-speaking part of the Spanish Netherlands (Hainaut), was trained in Antwerp under Abraham Janssens. During his stay in Rome (1616/1617), he became acquainted with Dirck van Baburen. Regnier was one of the founders of the ‘Bentveughels’, a group that brought together Dutch and Flemish painters in Rome. Nicolas Regnier is counted among the Dutch Caravaggists.
