The present composition refers to a painting by P.P. Rubens (c. 1618), which he sold to Sir Dudley Carleton as part of an exchange involving the latter’s collection of antiquities. The composition also appears in a painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder, "Allegory of Sight and Smell", which forms part of a series on the five senses held at the Prado in Madrid (Inv. P 01403) and was also disseminated through prints by Wenzel Hollar (1607-1677) and Charles-Nicolas Varin (1741-1812).
