St. Francis, Embracing the Cross. Oil/canvas, relined, verso old inventory label "Württ. Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Inv. Nr. LS 207".
Southern German private collection. The motif of the saint embracing the cross was developed by Strozzi c. 1610 and repeated by him on several occasions. One of the best-known and probably also earliest versions is housed in the Palazzo Rosso in Genoa, whilst another is in the Capuchin monastery in Voltaggio. The saint’s hands were recorded by Strozzi as a drawing in the so-called Sagredo Album, presumably as a ‘ricordo’ (cf. Camillo Manzitti, Bernardo Strozzi, Turin 2013, p. 79, figs. 11 and 12, and p. 285, P.G. no. 68). As a loan from 1948-1958 at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Cf. catalogue Sammlung Heinrich Scheufelen, Stuttgart 1948 p. 37, there as "Spanisch, 17. Jhdt.".
