One of the most important themes in Verboeckhoven's oeuvre of the 1940s is the interior of stables, which is depicted under entirely new conditions within Flemish-Dutch painting. It is the open air that penetrates the interior and thus illuminates the spatial situation almost like a spotlight. Here it was possible to focus on many individual details and elevate the insignificant subject to something meaningful. The animals are skilfully illuminated by bright light, and the hare, dove and clay pot are presented to the viewer in a still life-like manner. It is Verboeckhoven's usual simple objects that are placed at the centre of the picture.
