Portrait of Prince Wilhelm II (1626 - 1650) of Orange (?). Oil/panel, signed and dated 1649 in the lower right.
Southern German private collection. The figure depicted is likely to be Prince William II of Orange, a conclusion supported by a comparison with the portraits of him painted by Gerrit van Honthorst. The prominent orange ribbon in the picture also provides a reference to the House of Orange. William II married Mary Henrietta Stuart, the daughter of King Charles I of England, in 1641. In 1647, he succeeded his father as Stadtholder of the Netherlands, but died just three years later at the age of 24.
