Lit.: Josse de Momper der Jüngere: (1564 - 1635). Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog. Freren 1986, p. 647/648 no. A170 with fig. (as probably by Philippe de Momper). The paintings by Philippe de Mompers were previously often mistaken for those of his father, Josse de Momper the Younger, as were the works of Frans de Momper, Josse’s nephew and Philippe’s cousin. In his catalogue raisonné of Josse de Momper the Younger, published in 1986, Dr Klaus Ertz also examined the works of Philippe and Frans de Momper in greater detail. He identifies the paintings previously attributed to the ‘Trevisomaler’ (a provisional name) as belonging to the oeuvre of Philippe de Momper. Philippe returned to Antwerp in 1624 from an extended trip to Italy and was admitted to the Guild of St Luke there. It is assumed that, in keeping with tradition, he received his training as a painter in his father’s studio, although this is not certain. He died in Antwerp in 1634 at the age of just 36; two years later, the Momper painting studio ceased operations following the death of his father, Josse.
