The depiction of the bagua trigrams on Chinese porcelain refers to Daoist cosmology and the I Ching system of order. The eight characters of continuous and interrupted lines symbolise fundamental forces of nature and processes of change. On ceramics they are usually arranged in a circle, sometimes grouped around the yin-yang symbol. Particularly in the Ming and Qing periods, they were executed in underglaze blue or enamel colours.
