The depiction of the bagua trigrams on Chinese porcelain refers to Daoist cosmology and the I Ching system of order. The eight characters of continuous and interrupted lines symbolise fundamental forces of nature and processes of change. On ceramics they are usually arranged in a circle, sometimes grouped around the yin-yang symbol. Particularly in the Ming and Qing periods, they were executed in underglaze blue or enamel colours. In addition to decorative functions, they also have symbolic meanings, particularly in terms of protection and harmony - Restored break to one of the flame ridges
