An ivory netsuke of a Sambaso dancer

Description:

Japan, Meiji period

The dancer stands on one foot, holding an open fan in the left hand, while the right hand is concealed beneath a formal robe carved with pine saplings. The head is movable and wears a tall hat made of dark horn, decorated with red lacquered circles on either side. Weight: 31 g.
