Depiction of a Shakyamuni triad (Shaka Sanzon) with the Sixteen Protective Deities (Jūroku Zenshin) of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra. In the center, beneath an ornate canopy, sits Buddha Shaka on a tiered lotus throne, flanked by the bodhisattvas Monju, riding a lion, and Fugen, riding an elephant. The protective deities consist of the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitennō), the Twelve Heavenly Generals (Jūni Shinshō), and additional figures. In the lower right, the Chinese pilgrim monk Xuanzang (Genjō Sanzō), depicted carrying scriptures, is shown.The painted mounting features large blossoms and scrolling vines. Ink, color, and gold on paper. Cut from a hanging scroll.
