Shakudō in combination with gold inlay (zōgan). Fully sculpted figure in a kneeling or semi-erect posture, the robe richly ornamentally decorated with inlaid and engraved patterns. The surface treated in a differentiated manner, with finely executed chiselling (kebori) to emphasise textiles, hair and physiognomic details. The figure holds a multi-part lantern (Tōrō) with a lid with a raised arm. The lantern body has reserves all round, which were decoratively designed using the Shibayama technique with ivory, horn, coral and lacquer. The decoration of the lantern is in the form of a small animal figure (probably a bird). The Ütransition between the figure and the lantern is formed by an ornamental connecting element with waves and spray. Corresponding design on the back and underside, the composition worked all-round. The depiction follows the style of export-orientated art objects (okimono) typical of the Meiji period, with an emphasis on decorative effect and perfect technical execution.
From an old South German private collection, assembled since the 1960s, originally this work is said to have been acquired in Zürich around 1900 - Partial traces of age and corrosion, missing parts of the inlays of the Shibayama koro, partly rest., minor losses - The EU trade certificate for the sale of this lot is available.
