Description:
Caucasus, late 19th c.188 x 109 cm
Two large hooked lozenge medallions dominate the brilliant blue field, rendered in ivory, red, and ochre-yellow. They are flanked by striking hooked triangular ornaments of highly distinctive form. The remaining field is densely filled with a variety of subsidiary motifs, creating a rich and balanced overall composition. The ivory-ground main border is particularly noteworthy for its elegant drawing and is framed by two narrow guard borders. Especially appealing is the partially visible third lozenge at one end of the rug, suggesting the continuation of the pattern beyond the woven field and thus emphasizing the infinite nature of the design.
From a South German private collection, acquired at Nagel Auctions, Auction 33T, 9 November 1999, lot 77 (copy of the invoice available) - Corroded brown areas; minor restorations to the edges
