Description:

Senufo, Ivory Coast
H. 33,5 cm (o.S.)
A very finely carved face mask, crowned with a prominent superstructure in the form of an impressively designed, abstracted hornbill, the “Calao”. The ‘Calao’ plays an important role in Senufo mythology. One interpretation holds that when the hornbill touches a person’s forehead, it bestows upon them power, knowledge and wealth. The “kpelie” combines human and animal characteristics and represents feminine beauty and fertility.
Notable Bavarian private collection, assembled from 1975 onwards - Minor damage and original or old repairs
