A Marasali prayer rug

A remarkably finely knotted prayer rug. Typical of this group is the design of the deep dark-blue field with serrated, outlined “boteh” motifs arranged in a diagonal color orientation. In the white-ground spandrel band are the, for Marasali rugs, almost obligatory, idiosyncratically stylized ornaments. A variety of borders finely frame the central field. Dated 137 AH = 1307 = 1889.
