Description:
Egypt (Fustat)H, 17,5 cm
The small figurine is remarkably well-modelled and fully three-dimensional, in contrast to many of the flatter and more abstractly rendered comparable pieces. There are two holes on the sides of the torso, presumably for inserting the separate arms. This type of early Islamic leg figurine is also referred to in the literature as ‘Coptic dolls’.
From the collection of the art dealer and collector Saeed Motamed (1925-2013), collected since the 1950s, largelydocumented in inscriptions dating from 1998, featuring drawings and descriptions in Persian. Partially documented in exhibition catalogues since the 1970s - Restorations, age-related damage and cracks
