Description:
Northern Argentina/Peru, early 19th c.ca. 120 cm
Florally chased silver sheet on wood. Attached silver decorative elements. These scepters have served as symbols of dignity and authority since colonial times. Local rulers, such as the mayors (alcaldes), were the primary owners of these richly decorated scepters. The eagle is a symbol of authority; the attached silver attributes symbolize Spain (a lion and a silver coin with the portrait of Charles III), the royal family (a stylized double-headed eagle), South America (a cross crafted in the missions), and the wealth of the district (the bell of the llama).
