Description:
Apulia/Magna Graecia, 4th century BCH. 33,5 cm
A footed, bulbous vessel with side handles and a central handle. Varnished black with red-figure decoration. In the centre is a depiction of a stele draped with a ribbon - presumably a funerary stele - upon which a widely flared patera bowl is perched. On the left-hand side is a depiction of a naked youth, laden with offerings and a sprig of foliage; on the right is a depiction of an elegantly dressed lady with further attributes. On the reverse are large, stylised palmettes. Highlights in white and pale yellow. Circumferential borders featuring laurel and meander patterns.
From an old German private collection, acquired before 1990, largely documented in photographs of the owners’ homes taken in 1984 and 1985
