Description:

China, 19th cent.
172 x 164 cm
Wool (dark red), plain weave, fulled. Imported from the West. Lower part from cotton (beige), plain weave. Embroidery: colored silk, satin stitch; gold thread, appliqué technique. The mighty golden dragon is hovering around a flaming pearl between clouds above the central rock rising from the waves. The ‘Eight Buddhist Treasures’ (Ashtamangala) with fluttering ribbons and black bats are dispersed between the clouds.
