Japan, late Edo period
40,5 x 14 x 11,5 cm
The shrine with a pair of mounted hinged doors showing Kannon occupying its centre, standing on a lotus base placed on a rock formation set on a pedestal, his right hand in varadamudra while the left is in front of his chest, wearing dhoti and a broad cape covering both shoulders, metal jewellery, his face displaying a serene expression with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows, painted facial details, his blue coloured hairdo combed in a chignon topped with the head of Amida Buddha secured with a metal tiara and a head halo behind. On the back a rectangular opening filled with a sutra in Japanese and Sanskrit.
