The origin of the Yellow Hat of the Gelug Tradition (after A. Berzin) Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) initiated a reform that led to the founding of the New Kadam Tradition or the Gelug Tradition (Yellow Church of Tibet). He instructed his monks to wear yellow hats, explaining that this was an auspicious sign to bring pure ethical discipline back to the monasteries of Tibet. Thus, the Gelug tradition also became known as the "yellow hat tradition". Wool, cotton.
