Description:
Japan, Edo periodH. 8,2 cm, D. 12,6 cm
Steep-sided bowl with slightly flaring lip (komogai-nari) on a wide base. Heavy, iron-brown stoneware shard with chirimen in the foot, covered with a gray, finely crackled glaze with white running marks in thicker sections and blistered kairagi at the foot. Two underpainting, one in manganese black: energetic diagonal brushstrokes; a second in iron brown: finer lines as a check near the lip. Fitted (but not original) wooden box (kiribako) with yellow cloth (ukon-momen) and furoshiki of green cotton.
