Mani stones show on their front the most recited, chanted and prayed mantra: Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum. It is the mantra of the "Bodhisattva of Compassion" Avalokitshvara. In his four-armed form, as Shadakshari, Avalokiteshvara works into the six different realms of being, the worlds of the six possibilities of rebirth. With his well-known six-syllable mantra he closes their gates to end the cycle of all causes of suffering. These are the worlds of gods, titans, humans, animals, hunger spirits and hell beings. These stones are found everywhere in the Lamaistic lands. They are piled up into cairns and walls, deposited at sacred sites and mountain passes, kept in shrines at home. They are considered to bring good luck and blessings. Stone, brass, engraved rim.
From an old and important German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1987, collection no. R76 - Traces of age
