Gahu's come in a wide variety of sizes and textures. This example is worn on the body during pilgrimages and contains an image of the personal protective deity as a miniature, clay relief (tsha tsha} or a small sculpture. Often, the protective deities of family members or ancestors who cannot participate in the pilgrimage are carried along. Then one also finds various printed protective mandalas and mantras, and much more. Already the front panel contains a whole programme of defensive magical and auspicious symbols. In the midst of a richly branched vine are the Eight Buddhist Symbols of Happiness. Two lucky dragons wind their way up the "window opening" of the amulet container. Below is the defensive magical grimace of Kirtimukha, an evil-preventing demon. Front: silver plate, body: copper plate.
